It’s that time again when Melges 24 sailors have an opportunity to work on their starts, mark roundings and crew work. The 2010 Sail22 Melges 24 Chicago Tuning Regatta is this weekend, August 6-8, 2010 at Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club. It’s not too late for your team to register and come out to work on improving your game. Sail22 has decided to waive the late fee for the event with the hopes of having a few last minute teams to come join in the fun.
The weather forecast provided by Weather Routing, Inc. is looking great for the weekend and we have many sponsors giving away great prizes. The first place team will win a $500 gift certificate from Zhik. Line Honors is giving away Musto bags for second and third. And prizes aren’t just for the top teams, other sponsors include Hall Spars donating Hall gear and a Melges 24 Sail22 Ultra Light Backstay, Melges Performance Boats is giving out Melges gear, Ronstan is donataing drink holders and sheet bags, SailRite has donated a sail repair kit in a waterproof box and some T-Shirts, Sailing World is giving away several subscriptions and T-shirts, McLube is giving away One Drop to every team, Harken has wet notes and bags for everyone, Quantum Sails has donated regatta folders, Cre843 is supplying the bow stickers, West System has given us some epoxy to award, YachtScoring.com is doing the scoring and registration website, North U has given a Tactics video and book, Astral Buoyancy will have their new Camino PFD to check out, Chicago Match Race Center is loaning us their Ribcraft boats and Weber Grills is awarding one of their Q grills. Ryan DeVos and his team of Ed Baird, Dick DeVos, Mike Hill, Brian Janney, Marty Kullman, Scott Nixon and Drew Wierda on Volpe are the winners of the 2010 Melges 32 Nationals in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
Yesterday, teams spent the day checking out the ice cream shops of Harbor Springs and paddle boarding and swimming in the bay while they waited on shore for breeze. Today, PRO Bruce Golison was hopeful for one last race and brought the fleet out to the course, but the breeze did not fill. John Kilroy and the Samba Pa Ti team finished second overall and John Porter and the Full Throttle team ended in third place. Joe Woods and his team on Red finished fourth and Rod Jabin’s team Ramrod was fifth overall. Hopefully the Melges 32 class will return to Harbor Springs in the future. It was definitely a great venue!
We are updating from the water live from Harbor Springs, Michigan and the Melges 32 Nationals on our sister site, SailingUpdates.com. Check it out for short and sweet info from the race course! Let us know what you think. We welcome any comments and suggestions. Ryan DeVos (Ada, Michigan) currently leads the fleet after day one and now has taken a bullet in the first race of day two. Photos will continue to be uploaded to Sail22.com as well. Enjoy!
